YOUR NEW KITTEN NEEDS

When you go to pick up your kitten you will need to take a sturdy cat carrier with soft bedding inside. You will need a carrier later when taking your kitten to the Vet so invest in one large enough to accommodate your kitten as he grows.
If your kitten is being flown to you the breeder will make sure the kitten is sent in an airline approved carrier. Some Breeders may have airline approved carriers you can purchase from them
or they can purchase or hire one from the airline for you.
When you pick up your kitten from the Breeder, do not take him out of his carry cage until he is safely in his new home. Ideally you should have a quiet room for the kitten where you can close the door, open his carry cage and let him come out when he is ready. Don't rush him. (Leave his food and water close by and his litter tray not too far away.) The way he is treated when he first arrives home will help determine how quickly he settles in. Take it slowly, do not overwhelm him with noise and lots of visitors. Give him peace and quiet and let him find his own way. Leave the carry cage in the room so he knows he has a safe place to retreat to if required. He may prefer to sleep in this instead of a bed for a while. Some kittens settle in quicker than others so please be patient.
Your kitten will need a cozy, comfortable bed to sleep in. There are many different styles available, you may even find one to match your decor! Make sure to place it in a quiet spot where there are no draughts and away from the litter tray. When you take your kitten home it is best to give him his own room with his carry cage, bed, litter tray and food/water. Once he is settled in and feels secure you can let him explore further.
Your kitten will need good quality food to ensure he grows strong and healthy. The Breeder will advise you of the diet the kitten is used to and give you information about his future needs. A kitten should be fed a well balanced diet and his needs will be different to a fully grown cat. The diet should be strictly adhered to, to avoid tummy upsets. You can change it gradually after the kitten has settled in by slowly adding a little of the new food to the old, adding a little more new each day until the changeover is complete. Obviously you will need food and drink bowls. I find with Persians a flat plate is best for food. We use stainless steel and china bowls and plates. It is best to avoid plastic plates.
Of course your indoor kitten will need a litter tray and there are various types and sizes available. Don't buy a small one, consider the kittens needs as he grows. A covered tray may help prevent litter being spread on the floor but some kittens prefer an open tray. There are several different types of kitty litter available and the Breeder of your kitten will advise you of the type of litter the kitten has been using. It is best to continue using the same type of litter the kitten is used to at least until he is well settled into his new home.
You may need to contact your Vet and make arrangements for your kittens next vaccination but it is also a good idea to introduce your kitten to your Vet when you first take him home and have a health check to make sure all is well. Some Breeders insist on this or the health guarantee will not be valid. You can also arrange a time in the future to have him/her de-sexed if not already done.
Kittens need lots of different toys to stimulate them and keep them active. This is most important if the kitten is going to be left alone for any period of time. If you go out to work and the kitten is to left alone all day you may consider getting two kittens so they are company for each other. Some Breeders will consider a reduced price for two kittens.
You will need to purchase some grooming equipment for your new kitten. Nails may need to be clipped every 2 or 3 weeks and it is a good idea to provide your kitten with a scratching post and encourage him to use this instead of the good furniture! The Breeder will advise you which grooming tools are needed and how often your kitten will need grooming. It is best not to buy anything for your kitten before speaking to the Breeder. If you are purchasing a kitten from Caloola Silvers we include a gift pack including several of these items.
It is important to look after your cats teeth and there are different products available to help you do this. Some Breeders recommend giving your cat chicken necks several times a week to help stimulate the gums and keep the teeth clean. They can be chopped into smaller portions for little kittens. You can also buy a pet toothbrush and toothpaste or products to spray directly on the teeth or to add to the drinking water. I recommend small chunks of raw beef or small pieces of chicken neck to my kitten buyers.
Finally keep your cats food and water bowls and litter tray clean and make sure your kitten/cat always has access to plenty of clean drinking water.
